Expansion Team With Little Success Thus Far

The Philadelphia Union joined Major League Soccer in 2010 as an expansion team . Team managed to make the playoffs in just their second season of play, and it appeared the team might be a contender in the league.

Unfortunately, since 2011, the Union have only qualified for the playoffs twice more and have only posted one winning record. However, it has not been all bad news as the team has competed well in the U.S. Open Cup, a non-MLS tournament. The team has finished runner-up in the tournament in 2014,2015, and 2018.

In 2018, the Union had their best record to date, going 15-14-5 and making the playoffs for the third time in franchise history.

With Six Weeks Left In the Regular Season, What Do We Know About The Philadelphia Union? Not Much

The Philadelphia Union remains an enigma. Still atop the Eastern Conference, a position its held since June, the Sons of Ben can’t seem to get out of their own way. An inexplicable loss to Chicago, who currently sit outside the playoff picture is followed by a solid...

Team Outlook for 2019 and Beyond

During the offseason, the Union picked up Mexican National Team midfielder Marco Fabian. His experience is seen as a key ingredient that the Union needs to make a repeat trip to the playoffs. They also signed 24-year-old striker Sergio Santos, and if he can perform at a high level, the team may have a potent attacking end.

The team is comprised of multiple veteran players and presently look to be a team on the rise. Most projections put the Union at finishing either third or fourth in the Eastern Conference. If so, they will easily make the playoffs and continue to build on a solid 2018.

We aren’t giving the Philadelphia Union odds to win it all anytime soon, but they are a team that should steadily build to be a contender over the next couple of years.
