The primary definition of adaptability is listed as “the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions.”
A secondary definition says “see 2019 Pittsburgh Steelers.
Once again, the Steelers found a way to adapt and adjust enough to come away with a win, this time a nailbiting 26-24 victory against Indianapolis that came down to surviving a field goal attempt by Adam Vinatieri.
LeVeon Bell gone? Ok. AB forces guys way out of town? Fine. Roethlisberger out? No biggie.
While injuries have decimated Pittsburgh this season, they’ve found a way to battle through. I’ll admit, though, when I say James Conner wasn’t going to play against the Colts, I thought that’s where the next man up philosophy would meet its match. It just seemed one injury too many to key players. So what did the Steelers do? They adapted. In a west coast offense that would have made Bill Walsh proud, Pittsburgh completed 13 passes to Jaylen Samuels coming out of the backfield. None of them went for more than 17 yards and he averaged just 5.6 yards per catch, but it kept the ball moving. They got enough out of Trey Edwards in the run game to get to the red zone before booting four field goals. The defense gave a boost with a pick six.
In short, the Steelers adapted. Again.
Steelers Week 10 Odds While Hosting the LA Rams
Because of the way they’ve been able to shift gameplan, seemingly on the fly, the Black and Gold has clawed its way back to the fringes of the AFC playoff race. Following this week, the schedule becomes very favorable with two against Cleveland, the Bengals and Cardinals all on the slate.
But they have to get through this week first and It’ll take a similar level of adapting this Sunday against the Rams. Both teams are on the outside of the postseason looking in at this point. You could argue that the game is more important to Pittsburgh given they have more ground to make up to get into the postseason. With that said, LA, even as a west coast team coming east, enters as a 3.5 point road favorite. Given that the Rams are coming off a bye, are the healthier team, and that the early indications are that Conner will miss this game as well, I’d be hard pressed not to put my money on Los Angeles.
For those scared about the Steelers 3.5 spread or do not want to touch the Steelers moneyline of +160, the Steelers Over/Under for Week 10 against the Rams sits at a relatively low 43.5. So there is some money to be made with the Steelers hosting the Rams in Week 10, and even as well as the defense is playing right now for Pittsburgh, everything in this matchup seems to scream Rams.
Which probably means the Steelers have them right where they want them.
